TRANSFORMATION OF PONTYPOOL GETS STEP CLOSER TO REALITY

South Wales developers Broadhall has submitted an outline planning application today (21.4.05) for the transformation of Clarence Corner, at the southern gateway to Pontypool. With a decision expected in the summer, the application includes exciting plans for a mix of high quality and well-designed residential buildings, commercial and leisure space and the creation of new offices and a car park facility. The submission follows ongoing consultation with Torfaen Council Members, Pontypool Town counsellors from the Operation Group and landlords and tenants, to whom a Masterplan of the proposals was presented on 3 March 05. Located alongside the A472 and adjoining the town centre, Clarence Corner is close to the new Tesco and Crane Street retail developments. The principle for the new development has already been adopted by the council in the form of the Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG). Michael Davies, Broadhall, commented: ÒThis is an exciting time in the planning process as we make the first step to hopefully seeing these plans become a reality. We have worked closely with Torfaen Council to get to this stage and to ensure our submission fully supports their regeneration strategy for Torfaen. ÒWe are looking forward to improving the gateway and creating a high quality and well designed development that the local community can be proud of.
